Rembrandts Groepsportretten

Rembrandt painted four group portraits: The Night Watch (1642), The ‘Staalmeesters’ (1662) and two Anatomy Lessons (1632 and 1656). A group portrait was intended to show the common identity of a group in a favourable way. Rembrandt combined this with attention to the individual subjects portrayed.

Moreover, he gives the viewer the feeling that they are experiencing an essential moment in the functioning of the group: something important is happening and we are there. As a result, the four paintings still appeal to the imagination. In this compact booklet the four paintings are explained in more detail and placed in a context by means of sketches, maps and other work by Rembrandt and his contemporaries.
